DeVry Inc. Signs Statement of Support for Employees in National Guard and Reserve

February 17, 2012

President and CEO of DeVry joins local elected officials, members of the National Guard and Reserve in demonstrating DeVry’s commitment to the military

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- DeVry Inc. (NYSE:DV), a global provider of educational services, today signed an Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Statement, recognizing employee service in the National Guard and Reserve.

Daniel Hamburger, president and CEO of DeVry Inc., signed the statement of support at a ceremony alongside Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Jay Sheedy, Illinois ESGR Employer Outreach Director and former Assistant Adjutant General - Air, Illinois National Guard; State Rep. Linda Chapa LaVia (D-Aurora); and State Sen. Ron Sandack (R-21st). Ron Taylor, co-founder of DeVry, a U.S. Army Veteran and past Illinois ESGR Chair, led the speaking program held at DeVry’s home office in Downers Grove, where local Mayor Martin Tully was also in attendance.

“DeVry has a distinguished history serving the military and its Veterans since World War II,” Hamburger said. “I’m honored to sign the ESGR Statement of Support to further commit DeVry Inc. and our family of institutions to programs that serve our nation’s Veterans and current service members.”

The ESGR Statement of Support enlists employers in development of human resource policies and practices that support and encourage employee participation in Guard and Reserve programs. The intent of the ESGR Program is to offer employers a way to publicly proclaim their support for employee service in the National Guard and Reserve.

“On behalf of the Illinois ESGR Committee, thank you to the DeVry Inc. family for its commitment to the men and women of the National Guard and Reserve,” Sheedy said. “Many of our Guardsmen and Reservists would not be able to continue to serve in uniform, if not for the support of employers like DeVry.”

More than 70 Illinois Veteran employees of DeVry Inc. and its institutions were invited to the signing event, including Ken Maher, of Schaumburg, who enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of 34 after the events of Sept. 11, 2001.

“The country was under attack,” Maher said of his decision to enlist, which required special waivers due to his age at the time. “I’ve had a lot of benefits from being an American and I felt this was my opportunity to give back.”

Maher is proficient in three languages and learned Arabic before his deployment to Iraq, thanks to the help and support of a co-worker whose native language was Arabic. Maher served in the Intelligence branch of the U.S. Army and in Iraq was part of a small unit that trained Iraqi soldiers.

Maher said he’s grateful for the support he received from DeVry at the time, including regular care packages from co-workers and pay supplement. Maher’s wife, Deb Maher, is also a DeVry Inc. employee and attests to the support both she and her husband experienced during his deployment to Iraq.

“DeVry was wonderful in its support during the year Ken spent in Iraq. Coworkers and bosses and even our CEO and founder went well beyond anything I would have expected to make him feel comfortable,” Deb Maher said. “And the support didn’t stop there. I had so many people go the extra mile to ensure my son and I were fine while Ken was gone. The deployment was hard on our family, but made easier thanks to the support of DeVry’s leadership and employees.”

In signing an ESGR Statement of Support, DeVry Inc. pledges to fully recognize, honor and enforce the Uniformed Services Employment and Re-Employment Rights Act (USERRA), ensure managers have the tools they need to effectively manage those employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve, and support our country’s service members and their families in peace, in crises and in war.

The Statement of Support demonstrates DeVry’s long tradition of helping students achieve their career goals. DeVry’s history of serving the military stems back to World War II when it was selected to educate U.S. Army Air Corps instructors on electronic devices. Following World War II, DeVry (then the DeForest Training School) was one of the first schools to be approved under the original G.I. Bill. Today, DeVry provides an array of programs and support services for employees in the military and their families throughout its multiple locations and online.
